A few of us decided to trot up JB today, for a trip to the hypermarket and some sightseeing. Armed with a tight budget and a voluntary driver, we made our way into the piercing heat of JB.
It’s been quite a while since I last set foot on JB soil. With flashes of Jln Ah Fook, Plentong’s Giant and Johor Jaya’s The Store fresh on my mind, making the trip back carried plentiful memories.
The roads seemed strangely familiar despite the toll of the years. I could recognize many of the places I had been before.
Perhaps a little too well.
The drive up the new Malaysian customs checkpoint imitated an F1 circuit with its loops and long lanes. Withholding a strong urge to puke, I could not help but notice a clear neglect for the wellbeing for the common man. No longer are pedestrians allowed to trek past the causeway, regardless of the massive jams that continue to haunt the border of our nations.
Saz brought us the view her farm in JB and I learnt that pineapples grew from shrubs! I had always thought that like durians, pineapples grew on trees!
Fired up from the new revelation, I snapped away at chickens running amok on the ground, traditional houses and noisy geese.
Bless my uneducated city-girl soul.
The quaint little house on the farm
The chicken Hilton - the chix coop!
Then we had to re-embrace modernization simply because stomachs had to be filled and drove to Giant hypermarket. It’s been ages since my last visit and much change has engulfed the place I had formerly spent much time trotting through.
No more chicken rice shop. No more Abang Burger. No more Sushi King.
We settled for lunch at Little Taiwan, devouring large bowls of soup, bland fried chicken and horrid steamed dumplings. After that, we ploughed the aisles of Giant, with me frantic and chanting my need for my Ayamas products.
It’s blardy fantastic quality. And freaking cheap too.
After the session of shopping, we settled down at Secret Recipe for a sinfully decadent walnut brownie drizzled in fudge, an orgasmic Iced Blended Choco drink and flowing conversation.
Yummy!
It was a good way to spend a day. Life sure is good.
